MEET THE ARTISAN: Jon Anderson of Anderson TimberWorks:

Anderson TimberWorks was founded by Jon Anderson, located in Red Wing, MN. Anderson TimberWorks teaches and explores traditional timber framing in an environment that values craftsmanship and community. Through classes and interactive instruction, students are able to learn timber framing methods that translate into building their own small timber framed structure.

In the 1990’s, Jon always thought, one day, he might just build a log cabin. Keep in mind, Jon had never touched a chisel, chainsaw or axe. However, toward the end of that decade, Jon figured out that time was slipping away and if he didn’t move soon, his dream of building a log cabin would never happen. In 2001, Jon participated in a log building class at the Great Lakes School of Log Building located in Ely, MN, instructed by Ron Brodigan. Following the class, Jon studied anything and everything associated with traditional building and solicited ideas from anyone that would share their building experience. This knowledge was then applied to building a hand-scribed log cabin, located in middle of nowhere and only accessible via goat path. Convenient, right? The structure was pretty much built entirely by one guy, Jon, with an axe, chainsaw and a large amount of persistence.

For Jon, log building was the thoroughfare to timber framing and dovetail construction. Along the way, he acquired rigging, cutting, sharpening, layout skills and even the ability to cut accurate beams from trees with a band-saw mill or hewing axe.

Fast forward to current day, Jon shares timber framing techniques and methods with students that are new to the craft through instructional classes at Anderson TimberWorks. Students can fuel their inner-drive with Jon’s timber frame classes and soon think “I can build that!”
